China's top negotiator summarizes illumination brought by China-U.S. ties
In a commemorative event marking the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the United States, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the enlightenment brought by the development of their ties. Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized that peace stands as the foundational cornerstone of bilateral relations.
Reflecting on the twists and turns in China-U.S. relations, Wang underscored the crucial lessons learned and emphasized that the absence of "conflict or confrontation" between these major nations represents the most significant peace dividend for humanity. Wang advocated for cooperation as the most prudent choice for both countries, emphasizing that win-win collaboration is the core feature of their exchanges. He pointed out the deep economic interdependence reflected in high levels of bilateral trade and two-way investment, discouraging artificial decoupling and blockades due to the associated losses.
Offering propositions for implementing the consensus reached by the two heads of state in San Francisco, Wang urged mutual respect and a correct understanding between China and the United States. He emphasized China's commitment to building stable, healthy, and sustainable relations based on mutual respect, dismissing any intentions of replacing or overshadowing others. Calling for peaceful coexistence and effective management of differences, Wang opposed resorting to confrontation, sanctions, or power hegemony based on divergences.
He stressed the need for both sides to leverage diplomatic, economic, financial, commercial, and agricultural mechanisms to promote mutually beneficial cooperation. David Meale, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in China, echoed these sentiments during the reception, extending congratulations on the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties. He affirmed the U.S. commitment to implementing the consensus between the heads of state, fostering the steady development of U.S.-China relations.
